Taxonomy
Ostrea erici was named by Hertlein (1929). Its type specimen is CAS 2094, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Pycnodonte (Pycnodonte) erici by Moore (1987); it was recombined as Pycnodonte erici by Woodring and Bramlette (1950) and Hendy (2020).
