Permoceramus was named by Waterhouse (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Permoceramus brownei.

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Permoceraminae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
