Phelopteria was named by Stephenson (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 790].

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Bakevelliidae by Vokes (1980) and El Qot (2006); and to Pteriidae by Lazo and Damborenea (2011).
