Terebratula royssiana was named by Keyserling (1846).

It was recombined as Athyris royssiana by Geinitz (1861); it was recombined as Athyris (Cliothyris) royssiana by Tschernyschew (1902); it was recombined as Athyris (Cleiothyridina) roissyana by Reed (1944); it was recombined as Cleiothyridina royssiana by Grigor'yeva (1967); it was recombined as Pinegathyris royssiana by Grunt (1980) and Grunt (1986).
