Coptothyris was named by Jackson (1918) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Terebratulidae by Hayasaka (1973); to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Terebrataliinae by Williams et al. (2006).
