Prospondylus was named by Zimmerman (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-l P Guad-l]. Its type is Prospondylus liebeanus.

It was reranked as Pseudomonotis (Prospondylus) by Reed (1944).

It was assigned to Pseudomonotis by Reed (1944); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Prospondylidae by Waller and Stanley (2005).
