Taxonomy
Neophricadothyris catatona was named by Cooper and Grant (1976). Its type specimen is USNM 153994a, a shell (Articulated shell), and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Phricodothyris catatona by Shi et al. (2002) and Tazawa (2016).
