Pterochaenia was named by Clarke (1904) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-l D Fras-u]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Lunulacardiidae by Vokes (1980); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pterochaeniinae by Fang and Ding (1993) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
