Rhombopteria was named by Jackson (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Avicula mira.

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rhombopteriidae by Korobkov (1960) and Kříž (2008).
