Serania was named by Krumbeck (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 94]. Its type is Serania seranensis.

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Limidae by Vokes (1980) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
