Bolitophila was named by Meigen (1818). It is extant. It is the type genus of Bolitophilinae, Bolitophilinae.

It was assigned to Mycetophilidae by Aldrich (1905); to Bolitophilinae by Johannsen (1909) and Lewis (1969); and to Bolitophilinae by Greenwalt and Blagoderov (2019).
