Striostrea was named by Vyalov (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R]. It is extant. Its type is Ostrea margaritacea.
It was assigned to Ostreinae by Vokes (1980); to Crassostreinae by Moore (1987) and Lamprell and Healy (1998); to Ostreidae by Todd (2001); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Striostreini by Bouchet et al. (2010), Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012) and Bolton and Portell (2013); and to Striostreinae by Raith et al. (2016).
