Wuxuanites was named by Pojeta et al. (1986) [Sepkoski's age data: D m Sepkoski's reference number: ZR87]. Its type is Wuxuanites lanceolatus.

It was assigned to Pterineidae by Pojeta et al. (1986); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
