Taxonomy
Proteosaurus was named by Home (1819). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Proteosauridae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ichthyosaurus by Holl (1829) and Owen (1840).

It was assigned to Proteosauridae by Hay (1902) and Hay (1930).
