Spathella was named by Hall (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras C Ms]. Its type is Sphenotomorpha rigidula.

It was assigned to Modiomorphidae by Cox et al. (1969) and Vokes (1980); and to Modiomorphoida by Sepkoski (2002).
