Apiotrigonia was named by Cox (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut-u K Maes]. Its type is Trigonia sulcataria.

It was reranked as Megatrigonia (Apiotrigonia) by Jones (1960).

It was assigned to Megatrigonia by Jones (1960); to Trigoniidae by Hayami (1975); to Apiotrigoniinae by Tashiro and Kozai (1982); and to Trigonioida by Sepkoski (2002).
