Taxonomy
Pionopleurum obesum was named by Cooper (1989). It is not extant. Its type locality is Jebel Balaidiyah, S1446, which is in a Callovian shallow subtidal limestone in the Tuwaiq Mountain Formation of Saudi Arabia. It is the type species of Pionopleurum.

It was recombined as Sphaeroidothyris obesum by Williams et al. (2006).
