Barberenasuchus was named by Mattar (1987). Its type is Barberenasuchus brasiliensis.

It was assigned to Sphenosuchidae by Mattar (1987); to Rauisuchia by Kischlat et al. (1999); and to Archosauriformes by Irmis et al. (2013) and Leardi et al. (2020).
