Taxonomy
Nicrosaurus was named by Fraas (1866).

It was synonymized subjectively with Phytosaurus by Kuhn (1964).

It was assigned to Parasuchia by Sereno (1991); to Pseudopalatinae by Long and Murry (1995); to Phytosauridae by Kuhn (1966), Galton (1985), Carroll (1988) and Hungerbühler (1998); and to Pseudopalatinae by Stocker and Butler (2013).
