Taxonomy

Microgomphodon oligocynus was named by Seeley (1895). It is not extant. Its type specimen is NHMUK R3305. Its type locality is Aliwal North Area, which is in an Anisian terrestrial siliciclastic in the Burgersdorp Formation of South Africa.

Synonyms

Herpetogale marsupialis was named by Keyser and Brink (1977). Its type specimen is R337, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is western Etjo Mtn, above upper arenaceous layer, which is in an Anisian/Ladinian terrestrial shale in the Omingonde Formation of Namibia.

It was synonymized subjectively with Microgomphodon oligocynus by Abdala et al. (2013).
Sesamodon browni was named by Broom (1905). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Aliwal North Area, which is in an Anisian terrestrial siliciclastic in the Burgersdorp Formation of South Africa.
