Aporata was named by Seilacher (1962).

It was reranked as the suborder Aporata by Rigby and Potter (1986), Rigby et al. (1988) and Rigby et al. (1994).

It was assigned to Sphinctozoa by Rigby and Potter (1986) and Rigby et al. (1988); to Calcarea by Boiko et al. (1991); and to Permosphincta by Rigby et al. (1994).
