Scaphogonia was named by Crickmay (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo K Vala Sepkoski's reference number: 1115].

It was synonymized subjectively with Myophorella (Myophorella) by Cox (1952); it was reranked as Myophorella (Scaphogonia) by Fleming (1987).

It was assigned to Myophorella by Fleming (1987); and to Trigonioida by Sepkoski (2002).
