Testudo imbricata was named by Linnaeus (1766). It is extant. It is the type species of Eretmochelys.
It was recombined as Eretmochelys imbricata by Fitzinger (1843), Cope (1875), Berry and Lynn (1936), van Dijk et al. (2014) and Rhodin et al. (2017).
