Asaphis was named by Modeer (1793) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Psammobiinae by Vokes (1980); to Psammobiidae by Glenn (1904) and Lamprell and Whitehead (1992); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
