Oncoceras pandion was named by Hall (1861). It is the type species of Beloitoceras.

It was recombined as Beloitoceras pandion by Foerste (1924), Kröger (2013), Kröger and Aubrechtova (2017) and Kröger and Aubrechtová (2019).
