Houornis caudatus

Taxonomy
Cathayornis caudatus was named by Hou (1997). Its type specimen is IVPP V10917, a skeleton (complete skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Beishan Quarry, Boluochi, which is in an Aptian lacustrine mudstone in the Jiufotang Formation of China.

It was synonymized subjectively with Cathayornis yandica by Zhou and Wang (2010); it was considered a nomen dubium by O'Connor and Dyke (2010); it was recombined as Houornis caudatus by Wang and Liu (2015).

L. H. Hou 1997A small species of Cathayornis with a transverse trough lying between the frontal and parietal. There is a minimum of three pairs of teeth on the mandible, a relatively well developed carina is present on the sternum, the tarsometatarsus is elongated and exceeds half the length of the tibiotarsus, caudals are unfused such that there is no pygostyle but instead a small tail is present.
