Cardinia was named by Edwards (1837) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn J Toar-l Sepkoski's reference number: 715]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); to Cardiniidae by Vokes (1980) and Scholz et al. (2008); and to Decapoda by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
