Cardiocardita was named by Anton (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R]. It is extant. Its type is Cardita ajar.

It was assigned to Carditamerinae by Vokes (1980); to Carditidae by Malumian et al. (1978), Lamprell and Whitehead (1992), Frassinetti and Covacevich (1995) and Frassinetti and Covacevich (1999); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
