Chionella was named by Cossmann (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 814].

It was replaced with Paradione by Dall (1886); it was reranked as Macrocallista (Chionella) by Vaughn (1921) and Mansfield (1940); it was reranked as Pitar (Chionella) by Mandic and Steininger (2003).

It was assigned to Macrocallista by Vaughn (1921) and Mansfield (1940); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pitar by Mandic and Steininger (2003).
