Carolinites ekphymosus was named by Fortey (1975) [Other figured material: cranidia, SMA 84210-1, 84214-5, 84217; pygidia, SMA 84218, PMO NF 1320, 351; librigena, SMA 84213]. Its type specimen is SMA 84212, a cephalothorax, and it is a 3D body fossil.
