Choniocardia was named by Cossmann (1904) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l T Eo-u].

It was reranked as Pleuromeris (Choniocardia) by Glibert (1985).

It was assigned to Carditamerinae by Vokes (1980); to Pleuromeris by Glibert (1985); to Carditidae by Lamprell and Healy (1998); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
