It was reranked as the subfamily Cricetopinae by McKenna and Bell (1997) and Maridet and Ni (2013).

It was assigned to Rodentia by Matthew and Granger (1923); to Muridae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Cricetidae by Maridet and Ni (2013).
