Bakevellia silberlingi was named by Boyd and Newell (2002). Its type specimen is UW A3979, a valve (Left valve), and it is a cast. Its type locality is AMNH B7861, University of Utah, which is in a Spathian shallow subtidal limestone in the Thaynes Formation of Utah.
