Odonatoptera was named by Martynov (1932). It is extant.

It was reranked as the superorder Odonatoptera by Grimaldi and Engel (2005) and Nel et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Metapterygota by Grimaldi and Engel (2005); to Eupalaeoptera by Bechly (2007) and Nel et al. (2009); and to Euhydropalaeoptera by Sroka et al. (2014).
