Shumardia lacrimosa was named by Dean (1973) [Paratypes: GSC 29336, 29337, 29423.]. Its type specimen is GSC 29335, a pygidium, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is GSC loc. 54076. District of Mackenzie, Keele Range, which is in a Llanvirn carbonate limestone in the Esbataottine Formation of Canada.
