Cymbophora was named by Gabb (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi K Maes-u].

It was reranked as Spisula (Cymbophora) by Packard (1916) and Kosnik (2002).

It was assigned to Mactrinae by Vokes (1980); to Mactridae by Popenoe (1937) and Tashiro and Kozai (1982); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Spisula by Packard (1916) and Kosnik (2002).
