Alexenia protexta was named by Jin and Ye (1979). Its type specimen is NIGP 42663 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Maerkehedong XIV F216, Baiyusi, Jiuzhi County, which is in a Wordian marine horizon in China.
