Ensio was named by Cox (1961) [Sepkoski's age data: J]. It is not extant. Its type is Ptychomya agassizii.

It was reranked as Gonilia (Ensio) by Cox et al. (1969) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014).

It was assigned to Astartidae by Cox (1961); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gonilia by Cox et al. (1969) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
