Leella was named by Dunbar and Skinner (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 146]. Its type is Leella bellula.

It was assigned to Staffellinae by Rosovskaya (1965); and to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002).
