Xuwulong was named by You et al. (2011).
It was assigned to Hadrosauroidea by Ramírez-Velasco et al. (2012); to Neoiguanodontia by Norman (2014); and to Hadrosauroidea by McDonald (2012), Cruzado-Caballero and Powell (2017), You et al. (2019), Dalla Vecchia (2020) and Verdú et al. (2021).
