Parelmoa was named by Carpenter (1947). Its type is Parelmoa revelata. It is the type genus of Parelmoidae.

It was assigned to Elmoidae by Carpenter (1947); and to Parelmoidae by Rohdendorf (1962) and Carpenter (1992).
