Gaimardia was named by Gould (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gaimardiidae by Vokes (1980), Stilwell and Zinsmeister (1992), Lamprell and Healy (1998) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
