Ampyx normalis was named by Billings (1865) [Lectotype selected by Whittington 1965]. Its type specimen is GSC 692 (lectotype), a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Lonchodomas normalis by Raymond (1925).
