Gemma was named by Deshayes (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Veneridae by Ward and Blackwelder (1987); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gemminae by Gardner (1943) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
