Taxonomy
Hippopodium was named by Sowerby (1819) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett J Tith Sepkoski's reference number: 93,94]. Its type is Hippopodium ponderosum.

It was assigned to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hippopodiidae by Vokes (1980) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
