Hippopus was named by Lamarck (1799) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Tridacnidae by Vokes (1980) and Lamprell and Whitehead (1992); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tridacninae by Harzhauser et al. (2008).
