Asaphus extans was named by Hall (1847) [Questionably assigned to this genus by author.]. Its type specimen is NYSM 4139 (lectotype), a pygidium, and it is a mold.

It was recombined as Bathyurus extans by Billings (1859) and Ross (1970).
