Kalentera was named by Marwick (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u J Bath Sepkoski's reference number: 93]. Its type is Kalentera mckayi.

It was assigned to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Kalenteridae by Marwick (1953), Bouchet et al. (2010) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
