Taxonomy

Libellula (Heterophlebia) was named by Westwood (1849). It is the type subgenus of Heterophlebiidae.

It was reranked as Heterophlebia by Handlirsch (1906), Tillyard (1925), Cowley (1942), Bode (1953), Whalley (1985), Carpenter (1992), Nel et al. (1993) and Ansorge (1996).

It was assigned to Libellula by Westwood (1849); to Heterophlebiidae by Handlirsch (1906), Cowley (1942) and Carpenter (1992); and to Heterophlebiidae by Tillyard (1925), Bode (1953), Whalley (1985), Nel et al. (1993) and Ansorge (1996).

Synonyms

Clydonophlebia was named by Cowley (1942).

It was synonymized subjectively with Heterophlebia by Nel et al. (1993) and Ansorge (1996).

It was assigned to Heterophlebiidae by Cowley (1942) and Carpenter (1992).
Acrophlebia was named by Cowley (1942). Its type is Heterophlebia geinitzi.

It was synonymized subjectively with Heterophlebia by Ansorge (1996).

It was assigned to Heterophlebiidae by Cowley (1942); to Anisozygoptera by Carpenter (1992); and to Heterophlebioidea by Nel et al. (1993).
Systellothemis was named by Handlirsch (1939).

It was replaced with Systellothemis by Cowley (1942); it was synonymized subjectively with Heterophlebia by Ansorge (1999).

It was assigned to Anisozygoptera by Handlirsch (1939); to Heterophlebiidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Heterophlebioidea by Nel et al. (1993).
Plagiophlebia was named by Bode (1953). Its type is Plagiophlebia praecostarea.

It was synonymized subjectively with Heterophlebia by Ansorge (1996).

Systellothemis was named by Cowley (1942).
