Lepton was named by Turton (1822) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Galeommatidae by Lamprell and Healy (1998); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Leptonidae by Vokes (1980), Beu et al. (1990), Wienrich (1999) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
